Shifter and Shadow
After a disastrous affair with a married man, the mystic noble Kirra Danalustrous has fled to a small fishing village that has become a refuge for children dying from red-horse fever. She has discovered she can save them by transforming them into animals who can take a medicine that’s poisonous to humans, but she isn’t certain any of their fearful parents will trust her extreme magic. She’s accompanied by Donnal, a peasant and shapeshifter who has loved her most of his life. After trying—and failing—to leave her, he has determined not to take his human form again, because he finds it too painful to be around the woman he knows he cannot have. But Kirra needs him. So do the dying patients. And if he’s going to help any of them, he has to have the shape—and the heart—of a man.

Interesting tidbit:
People have asked me for years to write the story of Kirra and Donnal. I’ve had the idea in my head for a long time, but I was too busy with other things to sit down and write it. I thought it might be difficult to get back into the rhythms of this world after so long away from it, but it was easy and fun and spend time with some of these characters again.

My favorite scene:
I love the bargain Donnal makes with Lilah and everything that comes after. But I also love the conversation that occurs in the final pages of Chapter Thirteen.
